Cyclones blank winless Tigers in district opener

HARLAN -- Senior Brett Croghan pitched six scoreless innings and sophomore Jared Moser provided an offensive spark from the bottom of the lineup Friday night as Harlan Community opened the postseason with a 7-0 win over Carroll in a Class 3-A district baseball semifinal.
The 2nd-ranked Cyclones took care of business against the winless Tigers, but by no means dominated as the score was only 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth. HCHS outhit Carroll 11-3 and took advantage of four errors that led to four unearned runs.
The victory moved the Cyclones (25-5) within two games of a sixth consecutive trip to the state tournament. They hosted Denison-Schleswig (13-23) in Monday night’s District 16 final, with the winner set to face either Winterset (19-12) or Glenwood (20-15) in Wednesday’s 7:00 p.m. Substate 8 final in Harlan.
Carroll finished the season with a highly uncharacteristic record of 0-25.
