Cyclone softball team outduels Lady Vikes 2-0
HARLAN (May 26) -- Jordan Heese’s fourth-inning double supplied the only RBI of the game Wednesday night as the Harlan Community softball team topped AHSTW 2-0 in a pitchers’ duel at H. Jack Field.
HCHS junior Tianna Kasperbauer (1-0) and senior Emily Brouse (first save) combined on a three-hit shutout while Heese followed Aurora Miller’s two-out single in the bottom of the fourth with a run-scoring gap shot to left-center that broke a scoreless tie.
The 13th-ranked (Class 4A) Cyclones (2-0) added an insurance run in the sixth when Kennedy Kjergaard singled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch after an error extended the inning.
Lady Vike eighth-grader Sienna Christian pitched an outstanding game in defeat, allowing just four hits and one earned run in six innings. She walked one and notched six strikeouts.
AHSTW (1-2) had just four base runners on the night, including singles by Christian, Rylie Knop and Natalie Hagadon. The Lady Vikes put the tying runs on base in the seventh before Brouse was able to retire Darian Hansen on a bouncer to first.
HCHS made a couple of outstanding defensive plays on diving catches by Heese at second base as well as Julia Schechinger in center field.
Kasperbauer faced the minimum in four scoreless frames, allowing one hit and striking out two. Brouse surrendered two singles, walked one and fanned two in three innings of relief.
Kate Heithoff reached base three times for the Cyclones on a walk, a single and an error while Kasperbauer had two sacrifice bunts.
