Cyclone softball team leaves the yard three times in sweep of Fillies

 SHENANDOAH (June 28) -- The Harlan Community softball team clubbed three home runs, totaled 22 hits and took advantage of 11 Shenandoah errors to sweep Monday’s Hawkeye Ten doubleheader with the Fillies 12-1 and 13-0. Both games lasted just five innings.
 The Cyclones set the tone for the night with a five-run first in game one, capped by Emily Brouse’s three-run homer. They added four runs in the fourth, including Madison Schumacher’s two-run double and Aurora Miller’s RBI single.
 Kate Heithoff, Tianna Kasperbauer, Julia Schechinger, Jordan Heese and Brouse all had two hits in the first game and Miranda Goetz scored three times as a courtesy runner. Heithoff had a triple and Ella Plagman added a double, giving HCHS four extra-base hits.
 Kasperbauer (11-2) pitched all five innings for the win, allowing five hits, walking none and striking out eight. Shenandoah prevented a shutout in the fifth on Macey Finlay’s RBI triple.
 Fillies’ freshman Jenna Burdorf took the loss, allowing 13 hits and 12 runs (six earned) in five innings.
 The night cap saw HCHS score 13 runs on nine hits off Sidda Rodewald, who was hurt by six fielding errors behind her.
 Miller belted a leadoff homer in the fourth for the Cyclones and Schumacher hit a two-run bomb during the team’s seven-run fifth.
 Miller also tripled, finishing 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Goetz added a pinch-hit two-run single to drive in the final runs of the game.
 Brouse (11-6) settled down nicely after issuing two first-inning walks and allowing a leadoff single in the second, pitching a five-inning two-hit shutout. She racked up 11 Ks, striking out the side three times.
 The Cyclones improved to 14-3 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play (22-9 overall) while the Filles dropped to 2-16 and 4-23, respectively.
