Cyclone girls punch ticket back to 3A State Meet
WINTERSET (Oct. 20) -- The Harlan Community girls cross country team clinched a fourth consecutive state meet appearance last Wednesday, placing third out of 12 schools in the Class 3A State Qualifying Meet held at Winterset’s Lakeview Country Club.
The girls’ field was headlined by three teams ranked in 3A’s top five by the IATC: No. 2 North Polk, No. 4 Dallas Center-Grimes and No. 5 HCHS.
DC-G, which placed five runners between eighth and 15th, won the team title with a score of 56. North Polk placed second with a 65 and the Cyclones earned the third and final qualifier spot with a 70, paced by freshman Lindsey Sonderman in second place and senior Kaia Bieker in third.
The HCHS girls will compete at the 3A State Meet on Friday, Oct. 29, at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course north of Fort Dodge.
“I’m beyond happy for this girls team,” stated HCHS head coach Doug Renkly. “They’ve earned all the success they have achieved this season. They are really looking forward to one last race in Fort Dodge."
The Cyclone boys also competed at Winterset and saw their season come to an end, placing eighth out of 13 teams with a score of 233. The field included three of the top nine ranked teams in 3A and 11 state-ranked individuals.
Junior Kaiden Milliken finished 36th out of 87 runners to lead HCHS, sophomore Joseph Bragg came in 38th and senior Tyler Shelton was 44th. Their times were within 14 seconds of each other.
“As a whole, I thought the boys ran an outstanding last race of their season,” Renkly said. “I was sad that Ian Shelton was not able to run due to a knee injury, but he was there cheering on his teammates. They have had some struggles in the last few weeks, but put together a solid team effort."
