Cyclone girls defend crown at Glenwood Cross Country Meet

Trey Gross, HCHS boys place fifth

 GLENWOOD (Aug. 29) -- Urbandale placed two girls in the top five, but Harlan Community had just enough depth to outlast the J-Hawks and defend its team title at Saturday’s 46th annual Glenwood Cross Country Meet.
 Scoring five runners between sixth and 17th, the Cyclone girls posted a winning score of 50 to hold off Urbandale (55), Glenwood (60) and Atlantic (94) in the team standings.
 The HCHS boys, led by Trey Gross in fifth place, scored a 137 and finished fifth out of 12 teams behind Urbandale (50), Lewis Central (73), Glenwood (90) and Atlantic (94).
 Individual champions on the day were Peyton Pogge of Tri-Center with a five-kilometer time of 19:57 and Atlantic’s Craig Alan Becker (16:19).
 Senior Brecken Van Baale paced the Cyclone girls with a sixth-place finish in 20:43. Liv Freund and Kaia Bieker were close behind in eighth and ninth, respectively, Abi Albertsen finished 14th and Ellie Gross was 17th.
 Trey Gross, who earned a seventh-place medal at last year’s Class 3A state meet, started his season with a solid fifth-place showing in 17:01. Also contributing to the HCHS team score were Mitchell Rueschenberg in 24th place, Ian Shelton 26th, Reed Boardman 40th and Seth Anderson 45th.
