Cyclone football season kicks off with Camp of Champions

HARLAN -- Setting the stage for the first day of high school football practice on Monday, August 8, Harlan Community held its annual Cyclone Camp of Champions last week (Aug. 1-5) at Merrill Field.
According to HCHS head coach Curt Bladt, 85-90 players attended this year’s high school camp, including 23 incoming freshmen. The middle school camp for grades 7-8 was attended by 64.
Outside of some rain on the first morning, the camp was an overall success, said Bladt, who enters his 39th season as head coach with 393 career wins.
“Everything went pretty well and we’re ready to get going (Monday),” he said.
Football practices open across the state this week with the restriction of no contact (helmets only) Monday and Tuesday, contact above the waist (helmets and shoulder pads) Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and full-contact practices starting on Saturday.
HCHS is looking to build on last year’s 8-2 season and district championship shared with Dallas Center-Grimes and Glenwood (all 5-1). The Cyclones lost to Creston/O-M in the first round of the 2015 playoffs.
The team will hold a preseason scrimmage on Thursday, August 18, at Merrill Field and open the season Friday, August 26, at Lewis Central.
