Clay sprints to pair of top-three state medals
DES MOINES -- What a difference a year makes for AHSTW sophomore sprinter Gage Clay.
Last season, Clay did what he could for the Vikings but was hampered by a foot injury that required surgery during the summer. He watched his older brother, Briar, compete in the 100-meter dash at state.
Twelve months later, it was Gage’s turn to own some of the spotlight on the blue oval inside Drake Stadium.
The AHSTW boys’ lone state qualifier this year, Clay scored 14 points in a span of 75 minutes Saturday afternoon, placing third in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200 dash (Class 2-A) at the 2016 State Track and Field Championships.
Clay also qualified for the finals of both events with top-three prelim finishes on Thursday. He saved his best times for the finals, however, clocking 11.13 seconds in the 100 and a personal-best 22.03 in the 200.
