Burchett signs LOI to go trap shooting at Iowa Central CC

What started in 7th grade came full circle when HCHS senior Katie Burchett signed a letter of intent to go trap shoot for Iowa Central Community College.

“It kind of makes me proud of myself that I can do this for so long and be rewarded to go to college to do it,” Burchett said. “It shows that I’m good enough to do that.”

Burchett developed a passion for shooting at a young age and has stuck with it ever since it began.

“My family is a gun family,” she said. “We’ve been trap shooting for a long time and my brother was actually in trap shooting before I was and I saw him doing it and I wanted to do it.”

Burchett emphasized how excited she is to meet sports shooting coach Terry Coleman and learn from him along the way.

“I signed up to go on a visit and he reached out and asked me if I wanted to come shoot while I was there,” she added. “I got to go to their trap range and see how their equipment is and then he explained the different teaching techniques. I’m excited to learn more and better myself really.”

While Burchett is focused on her college days, she acknowledged her relationships she built with her high school coaches Jason Paulsen and Leland Kaufman will be tough to leave behind.

“They’ve been a constant throughout my middle school and high school career,” she said. “They’re always going to be really good friends to have. They’ve taught me basically everything I know about trap shooting.”
