Boys soccer eliminated from the playoffs

Thursday night at Merrill Field, the HCHS boys varsity soccer team battled the Winterset Huskies in a playoff game, but were eliminated in a shootout as the Huskies went on to win 3-2.

“As we went along, we learned how to play with each other and at the end, we had a six-game win streak coming into here and we took it to penalty kicks and we just didn’t have enough,” said HCHS Head Soccer Coach Dave Voge.

Senior Ashton Lyon had two goals for the Cyclones that forced the game into overtime.

“This was an unbelievable game from start to finish,” he said. “Ashton has been under the weather all week and he wasn’t even sure if he was going to play today.”

Despite an early exit for the Cyclones, Voge highlighted some key takeaways from the season.

“The way these guys improved over the season,” he said. “They learned how to pass better and share the ball better. It was good to see that progression throughout the year.”

With the seniors who just graduated, Voge talked about what he’ll miss most about them and their commitment to the program.

“The growth of these guys and the leadership of all of them,” he added. “Some of them are more vocal than other ones. Just as a group, a great group of seniors. I’d take them back next year in a heartbeat.”
