Back-to-back: Cyclone boys defend home turf

HCHS places five runners in top 15 to win Cyclone Invite over Thomas Jefferson; HCHS girls place 2nd to Denison

HARLAN -- A year after winning its first-ever Cyclone Invite championship, the Harlan Community boys cross country team defended the home crown Saturday morning by outlasting Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson at the Harlan Golf and Country Club.
Placing five runners in the top 15 and stealing key points from Tee Jay down the stretch, the 6th-ranked (3-A) Cyclones scored a 43 to finish 10 points ahead of the Yellow Jackets (53) and claim their third team title of the season.
The winning girls team, meanwhile, was Denison-Schleswig, which posted a 47 to finish well ahead of second-place HCHS (90) and third-place Glenwood (101).
Individual titles were won by Underwood’s Karley Larson in 19 minutes, 25 seconds, and Lewis Central’s Brenden O’Brien in 17:01.
AHSTW also competed in the meet, with the Viking boys finishing 12th out of 13 teams with a 265. McKenzie Mantell earned a 14th-place medal for the Lady Vikes, who did not have enough varsity runners for a team score.
