Atlantic hands Cyclone boys another close loss
HARLAN -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team started the season by winning its first four games by margins of 1-0 or 2-1.
As the calendar moves into May, however, those low-scoring games are no longer going the Cyclones’ way as they suddenly find themselves barely above the .500 mark.
On Friday night at Merrill Field, HCHS suffered its third consecutive one-goal defeat in Hawkeye Ten Conference play, losing to Atlantic 1-0 in an evenly-matched affair. The Trojans scored the only goal with 32:09 left in the second half when David Thomsen drilled a low shot through traffic and into the right corner of the net following a pinball-like scramble in the box.
The Cyclones certainly had their chances to score - both before and after Thomsen’s goal - but finished with just five shots on goal against Trojan goalie Nolan Farver.
HCHS is now 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the Hawkeye Ten. Atlantic improved to 7-4 and 2-2, respectively.
