2A District Boys BB: Viking rally falls short vs. Knights

 AVOCA (Feb. 20) -- The AHSTW boys basketball team saw its season come to an end last Thursday night following a 73-69 Class 2A district semifinal loss at the hands of Kuemper Catholic.
 The Vikings fell behind 20-12 after one quarter and played from behind the rest of the game, keeping the pressure on until the end as the Knights knocked down 26-of-32 free throws to hold them off.
 Kuemper, led by Kyle Berg’s 28 points and 16 rebounds, improved to 8-14 overall. The Knights lost to Panorama 82-70 in Tuesday’s District 15 final at Harlan.
 AHSTW finished the year at 17-5, including a second-place 14-2 record in Western Iowa Conference play. Its only WIC losses were against top-ranked Treynor.
 Viking sophomore wing Raydden Grobe had a monster night vs. Kuemper, making 11-of-19 field goals and scoring a game-high 29 points. Grobe hit three treys in nine attempts and also grabbed five rebounds and two steals.
 Freshman Brayden Lund also cracked double figures with 16 points and a team-high eight boards. Additional scoring for the Vikes included Clayton Akers with eight points, Michael Mantell five, Joey Cunningham five, Sam Porter four and Kyle Sternberg two.
 AHSTW will graduate six seniors off this year’s roster - four of them starters - in Porter, Akers, Cunningham, Mantell, Joey Goins and Brody Langer.
