Randy Lee Greer, 69
Randy Lee Greer, son of Robert Louis Greer and Lois Ethel (Arnold) Greer Wirth, was born on July 4, 1953 on the Naval base in Pensacola, Florida. He was baptized at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Council Bluffs, Iowa and confirmed at the Congregational Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. He attended Peterson Grade School in Council Bluffs, Iowa until his move to Harlan. He continued his education in the Harlan Community School District. His junior and senior years were spent at St. John’s Military School in Salina, Kansas. After graduation, Randy attended Western State College in Gunderson, Colorado.
On August 19, 1972, Randy was united in marriage to Mary Kay Ostrander. One son, Jeremy, was born to this union. Randy converted to Catholicism, and on May 1, 1982, he was united in marriage to Geralyn Coenen at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Three sons, Brett, Brady and Dylan, were born to this union. Randy worked for many years at First Federal Bank and Metropolitan Bank before becoming the Chief Technology Officer at Sorensen’s Computer Connections, Inc. (SCCI), in 1995. He continued to actively work for SCCI adding the additional position of Technology Coordinator - Peer Groups for ConnectWise. Randy was very active at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, playing bass guitar in the praise band.
Randy always had a love for music and played bass guitar in two bands, The Upbringings and Travelin’ Light. Along with playing music, Randy loved attending concerts and was an avid reader, especially of Stephen King novels. Spending time with friends and family was always important to Randy, whether it was camping with his grandkids, tailgating and cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers, or trekking to Canada for a fishing trip, a special activity he shared with his stepdad, Rusty, his sons and his brother, Ron.
Randy died on July 2, 2023 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, two days before his 70th birthday. Although he didn’t receive gifts for his birthday this year, he was able to give to others through the gift of organ donation. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Greer and his stepfather, Frank “Rusty” Wirth. He is survived by his wife, Geralyn of Harlan, Iowa; his mother, Lois Wirth of Harlan, Iowa; four sons, Jeremy (Angie) Greer of Omaha, Nebraska, Brett (Lindsey) Greer of Honey Creek, Iowa, Brady (Presleigh) Greer of Dhaka, Bangladesh and Dylan (Jake) Kaihewalu-Greer of Long Beach, California. He is also survived by his brother, Ron (Connie) Greer of Bellevue, NE; step brothers Jim (Gail) Wirth of Paradise Valley, Arizona and Joel (Paula) Wirth of Chandler, Arizona; five grandchildren, Brandon, Mason, Lennox, Landri, and Sophia and many friends and loved ones.
A 10 AM Mass of Christian Burial was officiated by Rev. Clement Owusu on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Matt Long, Darell Butcher, Ethan Butcher, James Reth, Brian Knapp, and Steve Long served as pall bearers.
Jeremy Greer, Brett Greer, Brady Greer, Dylan Greer, Brandon Greer, and Mason Greer served as honorary pallbearers. A burial was held following the service at Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
Pauley Jones Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
