Mary Ann Johnson, 93

April 23, 1929 – November 21, 2022

 Mary Ann Johnson, age 93, died on November 21, 2022 in Harlan, Iowa. Visitation was held on November 30, 2022 at 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. A Funeral Service was held on December 1, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Donna Ewert officiating. Burial was held in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
Mary Ann Johnson, the daughter of David Thomas and Ellen Rose Carithers Armstrong, was born April 23, 1929, at her parents’ home near Morning Sun, Iowa. She was baptized as an infant and joined the Reformed Presbyterian Church at the age of twelve. Mary Ann was valedictorian of her Morning Sun 1946 graduation class. She went on to graduate from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA with honors in 1950.  She was the first woman to graduate with a major in Accounting from that school and she was also the first woman in Iowa to qualify for Accounting Practitioner certification. As well as practicing accounting, Mary Ann taught in Newton, LuVerne, Harlan and for seventeen years at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge.
On July 13, 1951, Mary Ann married Forrest Johnson in Morning Sun. They had two sons: Thomas William and Ted Robert. She enjoyed collecting antique glassware and researching family history. Few people have ever lived with Rheumatoid Arthritis longer than did Mary Ann — sixty-four years.  
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband of nearly sixty-eight years, Forrest Johnson, and her parents, David and Ellen Armstrong. She is survived by her children, Tom (Simone) Johnson of  Harlan, Iowa; Ted Johnson of Harlan, Iowa; grandson Townes Wensink- Johnson of Harlan, Iowa;  brother, David (Janet) Armstrong of Elmhurst, IL; many friends.
