Fr. Robert Schoemann

Robert Schoemann, son of Chris
and Sophia, was born November
9, 1938 in Harrison County. He
was baptized, received First Communion,
confirmed and ordained
at St. Mary’s Our Lady of Fatima
Catholic Church in Portsmouth, IA.
Robert went to Cass Center Country
School through 5th grade, and
then attended 6th thru 10th grade at
St. Mary’s in Portsmouth and 11th
through 12th grade at St. John Vianney
Seminary in Elkhorn, NE.
He went on to attend Conception
Seminary College in Conception,
MO and Mount St. Bernard Seminary
in Dubuque, IA.
Fr. Bob was ordained on June 5, 1966. His ministries included Chaplain
of Mercy Hospital and teaching at St. Joseph Academy, both in Des Moines.
He served at parishes in Council Bluffs, Carter Lake, Des Moines, Woodbine,
Pisgah, and Waukee. Fr. Bob possessed a special gift of being compassionate
and understanding to those in need. He worked for many years with
Beginning Experience and this brought him much joy. He was gentle, always
generous of his time, talent and treasure, enjoyed just being with people and
gave of himself in ministry to God’s people. Fr. Bob liked to say that “He was
good for the priesthood and the priesthood was good for him.”
Fr. Bob enjoyed life, especially time on the farm and time with family
and friends. He enjoyed traveling, watching basketball, a good card game
and home cooked meals. He had good old common sense and could make
friends easily.
Fr. Bob was preceded in death by his parents Chris and Sophia Schoemann,
his brother Gene Schoemann and his three sisters, Sr. Elaine, Sr. Mary
and Sr. Josephine, and his brothers in law Andrew Pauley and Vic Langer.
He is survived by his brother John, his sisters Grace Pauley, Ceil Langer, his
sister in law Thelma Schoemann and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Fr. Bob had a great love for the priesthood and always supported and encouraged
men to respond to the call of the priesthood. In lieu of flowers, memorials
can be sent to the Seminarian Fund for the Diocese of Des Moines,
601 Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA 50309.
An 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Bishop William
M. Joensen, Phd and concelebrated by Fr. Ken Gross, Msgr. Larry Beeson,
and Fr. Chinna Devaraj at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in
Portsmouth, Iowa on Saturday,
December 3, 2022.
Dan Pauley, Pat Pauley,
Tom Langer, Greg Langer,
Bill Shoemann, and Greg
Schoemann served as
paulbearers. A burial was
held following the service
at St. Mary’s Cemetery in
Portsmouth, Iowa.
