Supreme Court Justice Larson honored for service

HARLAN -- Retired Iowa Supreme Court Justice Jerry Larson was honored last week as the longest serving justice in the history of the Iowa Supreme Court (1978-2008).
Larson (middle), of Harlan, was honored by Chief Justice Cady and the justices of the Iowa Supreme Court  during the court’s visit to Harlan Wednesday, Nov. 4.
The court convened at Harlan Community High School, and heard oral arguments in the case The State of Iowa vs. Taquala Monique Howse.  Oral presentations were made by attorneys for both sides in the case.  The court held a public reception following the hour-long court proceedings.
Larson is shown here with Chief Justice Cady, left, and his secretary from March 13, 1981, until his retirement in 2008, Tamara Barrett.
In related news, Larson’s daughter Suzy Christensen, Harlan, was selected last week as Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad’s pick to fill a vacancy as judge in the 4th Judicial District.  In addition, Larson’s son, Jeffrey Larson, Harlan, is the chief judge for the 4th Judicial District, having been initially appointed in 2003.
