Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is honored with Excellence in Action Award

SHELBY COUNTY —The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office was a recipient of the Iowa State Association of Counties (ISAC) Excellence in Action Award. The competitive award recognizes innovative county government employees, programs and projects. The Shelby County Board of Supervisors nominated Sheriff Neil Gross and his department for the award for the successful consolidation of the Harlan Police Department into the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office via a 28E Agreement.
Sheriff Gross was presented the award last week at the ISAC Annual Conference.
“Sheriff Gross’ leadership, attention to detail and vision for our county, created a win / win opportunity for Shelby County and the City of Harlan,” said Shelby County Board of Supervisors Chairman Steve Kenkel.
The nomination stated no less than 15 other municipalities and counties have contacted Shelby County to learn more about the unification process. “The existing strong partnership between the city and the county, in addition to Sheriff Gross being open to the idea, were ingredients for a successful outcome,’ the nomination read.
“The intended improvements consisted of better quality and safety for all Shelby County citizens and law enforcement; improved recruiting, retention, and employee satisifcation; cost neutral or reduced expenses; and provided the opportunity to serve as a model for others.
“The Board of Supervisors want to congratulate Sheriff Gross, his committed and dedicated staff, along with the strong partnership they have built with the city of Harlan in building this United Law Enforcement team,” Kenkel said.
“Shelby County is proud of their accomplishments and they are well deserving of this prestigious state award. They have raised the bar for innovation in public safety.”
