Enjoying good food while ‘gallivanting’ around Shelby County
SHELBY COUNTY — Jay Goodvin, known as “The Iowa Gallivant”, recently made two stops in Shelby County for his popular travel blog.
Goodvin travels Iowa, promoting tourism and dining throughout the state for his 50,000 followers. When not creating content, he works as a paradeucator for the Iowa City Community School District, allowing him to travel during school breaks.
Goodvin stopped at the Norse Horse in Elk Horn, which represented Shelby County in his “Burgers and Backroads” tour throughout Western Iowa.
Doug Thompson and the staff impressed Jay and company with the quality burgers and sides and great service.
Saturday, August 31 he visited Troy’s Bar & Grill in Earling during his 99 Tenderloins quest. His goal is to help small businesses reach customers they otherwise may not have the opportunity to reach. Jay selects places to visit based on recommendations within his platform and Troy’s in Earling was often suggested for both burgers and tenderloin.
The owner suggested Jay try the “Joe Gross” version of the tenderloin which features pepperjack cheese, grilled onions, and bacon. Jay went with the local favorite and said, “Wow! This one is a true contender on my best of the 99! Fantastic!” Jay also admired the fries and was told by a local Troy’s may be one of the only dining establishments in Shelby County to serve hand cut fries.
Jay has been to Earling before, and he featured the sausage made by Earling Locker in his book “Rural Iowa Sausage: History & Tradition of Brats on the Backroads.”
Jay said, “You know, pound for pound, Shelby County has some of the best dining establishments in all of Iowa.”
