Wolves sweep Audubon for key early-season win

MANNING -- The IKM-Manning volleyball team took a good first step toward contending for the top of the Western Iowa Conference here Thursday night, sweeping Audubon 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 in the WIC opener for both squads.
Five days after losing to the Wheelers (20-22, 17-21) as part of a fourth-place showing at the South Central Calhoun Tournament, the Wolves played consistently sharp and aggressive on their home floor and trailed only once - on the first point of the match - prior to a highly-competitive final set.
With Audubon leading 13-8 in the third, IKM-Manning senior Kelli Grimm came up big during a crucial 8-0 run and the Wolves were narrowly able to hold on and avoid a fourth set.
In the other key WIC match of the night, fourth-ranked Tri-Center swept sixth-ranked Treynor 25-17, 25-18, 25-14 in a battle of unbeatens. The Trojans and Cardinals, along with the Wolves and Wheelers, are considered leading contenders for a WIC title this fall.
