Wolves fall to 11th-ranked Cardinals in four-setter

 MANNING (Sept. 6) -- The IKM-Manning volleyball team opened conference play with a 3-1 loss to 11th-ranked (2A) Treynor on Thursday night as the first set proved pivotal in the final outcome.
 The Wolves led 22-18 in set one but were outscored 8-2 down the stretch and lost 26-24. The momentum carried over into set two which the Cardinals also took 25-14. IKM-M managed to extend the match with a hard-fought 25-21 win in set three before struggling in set four and losing 25-10.
 The Wolves dropped to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in Western Iowa Conference play.
 Senior Gabby Cadwell had a strong night offensively for the Wolves, leading the way with 13 kills (.125 efficiency). Sammy Halbur and Caitlin Muhlbauer added five kills each and Mya Irlmeier had four. Muhlbauer totaled four blocks, including one solo.
 Sadie Thompson, the team’s primary setter in this year’s new 5-1 offense, had 26 assists and served 11-for-13 with an ace. Mya Nelson led the team with six digs, followed by Cadwell and Emily Kerkhoff with five and Sydney Wegner four.
 The Wolves also played in Saturday’s Griswold Tournament, winning three straight matches in pool play before losing to Denison in the semifinals to finish 3-1.
