Wollaston, Heithoff goals rally Cyclones past Rams in postseason opener

COUNCIL BLUFFS (May 20) -- Nearing the midway point of the second half Monday night, Harlan Community was outplaying Glenwood but still trailed 1-0 as time started to become a factor.
Barely two minutes later, the entire complexion of the soccer match had changed.
Getting back-to-back goals from Aaron Wollaston and Michael Heithoff in a matter of 142 seconds, the Cyclones suddenly led by one and never let go of their momentum, holding off the Rams 2-1 at Council Bluffs Lewis Central in a Class 2A boys substate quarterfinal.
HCHS, which also topped Glenwood 1-0 on April 29, improved to 13-7 and advanced to Wednesday’s Substate 8 semifinal at Denison. The Rams finished 7-11.
“Glenwood is a great team, they possess the ball very well, but once we got that first goal and then after the second goal, the momentum went our way and they were the ones that were kind of getting disorganized and we were starting to possess the ball better,” said HCHS head coach Dave Voge.
“It really takes a lot to score [in soccer], but once you do score it gives you some adrenaline and some momentum and we were able to hold on.”
Playing in cold, damp and windy conditions, Glenwood struck first in the seventh minute of play when John Palmer met a cross from Kyle Jorgensen inside the six-yard box and volleyed it directly into the net without breaking stride.
About nine minutes later, the Rams put together another strong attack but misfired on two shots. From that point on, the Cyclones gradually began to take over from a possession and shots standpoint but the score remained 1-0.
Finally, with 23:39 left in the contest, Wollaston found himself open in the center of the 18-yard box and put one past Ram goalie Minh Ngo to tie the score. The goal was set up by a Heithoff steal and a double assist from Colton Barnes and Dalton Gross.
Moments later, HCHS was celebrating again as Heithoff took control of a loose ball, dribbled through a clearing and launched a missile to the back of the net from 34 yards out that proved to be the game winner.
