Wingert earns Dan Hill Invite championship

HCHS senior wins at 170, team places 6th

HARLAN -- Jacob Wingert opened his senior season in strong fashion Saturday afternoon, winning three straight matches as Harlan Community’s lone champion in the Dan Hill Invitational.
HCHS placed sixth out of 11 teams in its season-opening home tournament, scoring 118.5 points and claiming eight total place-winners.
Wingert, who placed fourth at last year’s Dan Hill Invite and later became a first-time state qualifier at 160, pinned his first two opponents before outlasting Urbandale’s Austin Lamm, 9-8, in the 170-pound championship match. He is the Cyclones’ first Dan Hill champion since Cale Stork placed first in 2013.
“It means a lot,” Wingert said. “It’s the last chance to actually win this (meet) and I finally got it... There was a lot of news kids in (my bracket) so I had a little more experience (and) I was confident.”
Junior Nick Foss (182) and senior Aaron Johannsen (285) both placed third for HCHS while freshman Ethan Lemon placed fourth at 113 in his first high school meet.
