Wingert bags lone Cyclone state meet win
DES MOINES -- Jacob Wingert’s first-round victory proved to be the highlight for Harlan Community as the Cyclones scored just two points at the 2016 State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines.
Wingert, a junior at 160 pounds, and senior 132-pounder Elias Shaeffer were both making their first state meet appearance for HCHS.
Wingert defeated Tyler Zeimen of Cherokee, 7-2, in Thursday night’s first round before being pinned twice in the first period Friday by East Marshall’s Nick Long (1:13) and Mount Vernon’s John Engelbrecht (1:34). Engelbrecht and Long eventually placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Shaeffer, meanwhile, finished 0-2 on Thursday night. He was pinned in 3:10 by top-ranked, eventual 2-A champion Keaton Geerts of New Hampton, then lost a 9-1 major decision to Spirit Lake Park’s Gavin Kramer.
