Wilson places second at soggy Atlantic Invite

HCHS girls team places fifth, boys finish 10th

ATLANTIC (Oct. 5) -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton senior Evan Wilson placed second in a tight three-person race for the boys individual title at a soggy and slippery Atlantic Cross Country Invite late Thursday afternoon.
Competing on Atlantic’s high school grounds, Wilson (ranked 2nd in Class 1A) ran in the front pack with Miles Scott of Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Nate Mueller of ADM for most of the boys varsity race, which featured 114 competitors. Scott crossed the finish line first in 16:30.14, followed by Wilson (16:32.64) and Mueller (16:33.83).
Conditions were far from ideal as heavy rain soaked the runners off and on, particularly during the girls varsity race, and created slick and muddy terrain.
The Harlan Community girls finished fifth out of 18 teams with a score of 152 while Exira-EHK’s girls were 18th with a 506. The HCHS boys scored a 257 and placed 10th out of 16 teams.
Top Cyclone individual performances were turned in by junior Greichaly Kaster (7th place) and freshman Brecken Van Baale (11th) on the girls side. Abby Alberti finished 35th in the 128-runner field. Official girls times were unavailable.
The Cyclone boys were led by freshman Trey Gross and senior Drew Voge, who finished within a half-second of each other and placed 37th and 38th, respectively. Isaac Jones came in 52nd.
The top runners for the Exira-EHK girls were Camryn Paulsen (92nd) and Jolene Jensen (98th).
