Wicks’ four goals lead HCHS girls to 7-0 win

HARLAN (May 4) -- Freshman Raegen Wicks scored four goals and sophomore Hannah Bissen added a pair on Saturday as the Harlan Community girls soccer team dominated Riverside 7-0 at Merrill Field.
HCHS, now 5-5 overall, posted six goals in the first 30 minutes before subbing freely the rest of the way against the shorthanded Bulldogs (0-9), who had just one player in reserve.
Wicks scored all four of her goals in the first half - capitalizing on six shots on goal - before sliding back to play defense for much of the second half. The hat trick plus one boosted Wicks’ goal tally for the season to a team-high nine.
In addition to her athletic ability, which she used to easily move around defenders and set up good shots Saturday, HCHS head coach Jared Boysen is impressed with Wicks’ will to find the back of the net.
“She just wants to score, I think that’s her biggest thing,” Boysen said. “She’s around the ball and whenever she’s there she takes it and she’s got a good foot.”
The Cyclones tallied 23 shots on goal (six each by Wicks and Bissen) compared to just three for Riverside and outshot the Bulldogs 29-5 overall. A high number of steals and intercepts by Harlan defenders kept the Cyclones’ possession time high and led to numerous close-range shots.
