Voge goal lifts Cyclones past Treynor in 2018 opener
TREYNOR (March 29) -- Drew Voge’s goal midway through the first half proved to be the game winner Thursday as Harlan Community held off Treynor 1-0 on a cold opening night for high school boys soccer.
In a non-conference matchup of two teams with good speed and stingy back lines of defense, Voge scored the only goal - a left-footer - with 22:50 left in the first half. Eli Boldan earned the assist, driving the end line from left to right and dropping a nice pass back to the top of the 18-yard box for a waiting Voge.
The 1-0 lead stood for the final 62:50 as the Cyclones allowed just three Treynor shots - none on goal. Levi Culp broke up a potential one-on-one opportunity for Treynor’s PJ Peatrowsky early in the second half and goalie Keaton Jones helped clear another Cardinal threat with about 1:30 to go and finished with two saves.
The Cyclones also blanked Treynor, 3-0, in last year’s season opener at Merrill Field. The Cardinals return all but one player from a team that finished 10-7 and lost to St. Albert in a Class 1A substate final.
The Cyclones finished with 11 total shots (five on goal), led by Cole Kramer with five and Boldan with two shots on goal. Hunter Manz had 11 intercepts on defense.
