Vikings win on a walk-off over Big Reds

AVOCA (May 31) -- Capped by Blake Holst’s two-run walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, AHSTW rallied twice last Friday night and outlasted Missouri Valley 7-6 in an extra-innings Western Iowa Conference baseball game.
The Vikings trailed 5-2 before tying the score with three runs in the fifth. They stranded the winning run at third base in the seventh and eighth innings but came through big in the ninth with their backs against the wall.
After Mo. Valley plated a run off Viking pitcher Clayton Akers in the top half of the inning, AHSTW quickly put the tying and winning runners on base with a Joel Sampson single and a walk by Sam Porter. Following Brody Langer’s well-executed sacrifice bunt, Holst lined the next pitch toward left-center to drive in a pair.
“This was an incredible game as we showed so much perseverance and grit,” said AHSTW head coach Jason Holst. “I am so proud of the way we played mentally tough through adversity. Each person on our team contributed either offensively, defensively or from the bench cheering on the team.”
Blake Holst finished 3-for-5 with three RBI for the 2-1 Vikings, who were playing their first game in a week. Joey Cunningham (1 double) and Akers both went 2-for-4 and combined to score three runs.
Akers (1-0) earned the win with five innings of relief. He allowed seven hits and two runs.
