Two-mile relay win highlights Cyclone home meet

HCHS boys place fourth in Ken Carstens Cyclone Invitational; 4x800 quartet cuts 20 seconds for team’s only gold

HARLAN -- Whether or not the Harlan Community boys track team wins a single meet title in 2017 is inconsequential to head coach Sam Brummer.
As long as the Cyclones are showing improvement against tough competition throughout the season, Brummer is optimistic about his team’s chances for success come mid-to-late May.
HCHS continued that trend at Merrill Field on Tuesday with a fourth-place finish in the Ken Carstens Cyclone Invitational, scoring at least once in 17 of 19 events on a near-perfect night to run.
Lewis Central paced the talented 10-team field with six gold medals and 143 total points, followed by Atlantic with 101.5, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson (95), HCHS (83) and Treynor (74).
The Cyclones have now finished between third and fifth in all four of their scored meets so far this year and have yet to claim more than one gold medal on any given night. Noticeable strides continue to be made, however, as Brummer’s young squad competes against some of the best athletes and teams in southwest Iowa.
On Tuesday, HCHS had 25 entries place in the top eight and/or score at least one team point.
