Treynor runs past Cyclone girls in opener, 61-43

Two key spurts propel 2017 state runner-up

HARLAN (Nov. 27) -- It goes down as a season-opening loss, but the Harlan Community girls basketball team stands much to gain from Monday night’s battle with Class 2A defending state runner-up Treynor.
Fueled by turnovers and transition baskets, the third-ranked Cardinals put together runs of 11-1 in the first half and 18-4 at the start of the third quarter to beat the 15th-ranked (4A) Cyclones 61-43.
HCHS won’t face many other teams this season with the combined length, athleticism and physicality of the Cardinals, who graduated just two seniors (starters Randi Robinson and Abby Tiarks) from last year’s 27-1 campaign.
Versatile junior Kayla Chapman did a little bit of everything for Treynor on Monday, totaling 19 points, 10 rebounds, seven steals, three assists and two blocked shots. The Cardinals came up with 20 steals as a team - nine by Konnor Sudmann - and converted many directly into points.
The Cyclones notched 10 steals of their own and played an effective 2-3 zone in the half court, but too many turnovers and a 31 percent shooting night prevented them from keeping the game close.
“We’ve got a lot of good things to look at. I thought defensively we were pretty solid,” said HCHS coach Zach Klaassen. “Offensively, we just need to relax, have some confidence, be patient."
