Treynor girls stymie Wolves in WIC opener, 49-34

TREYNOR -- With their top returning scorer held to just four shot attempts on the night, the IKM-Manning girls struggled for offense in Friday’s 49-34 Western Iowa Conference loss at Treynor.
IKM-M junior guard Kia Rasmussen, who averaged 17.7 points per game a year ago, was limited to just five on Friday, hitting a second-quarter three-pointer and scoring off her own steal in the fourth. Treynor excelled defensively by using a 1-2-2 zone in the first half and a box-and-one in the second.
The Cardinals’ top scorer, meanwhile, was nearly unstoppable as junior Madelyn Deitchler powered to the hoop on drives and also scored on putbacks to finish with a game-high 24 points.
The WIC opener for both ‘Top 10’ teams was delayed by an hour as the scheduled officials did not show up and a new crew had to be found.
The third-ranked (2-A) Cardinals improved to 3-0 overall while the 10th-ranked Wolves were playing their first official game of the year.
IKM-Manning made just 14-of-47 field goals (30 percent) and turned the ball over 22 times against Treynor’s zone press.
“They are tall and long,” said IKM-M head coach Gene Rasmussen of the Cardinals. “It’s tough to make good passes. We didn’t make very good decisions against their press.”
The turnover count was compounded by the fact that the Wolves were not shooting well. With Treynor focused on identifying and/or locking up Kia Rasmussen, other players needed to step up and knock down open jumpers. IKM-M also struggled at the line, making just 2-of-9 attempts.
