Top-ranked Cyclones set for latest state charge

HCHS baseball team caps 28-3 regular season with win over TJ, will host Carroll in district opener

HARLAN (July 11) -- The Harlan Community baseball team closed the books on another outstanding regular season here Wednesday night, beating Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson 8-3 as Brett Sears homered twice and Logan Klaassen pitched a complete game.
Now the fun part begins as the number one-ranked Cyclones (28-3) gear up for a potential run to their eighth consecutive State Baseball Tournament as the top seed in Class 3A, Substate 8.
Harlan’s Jim Goeser Field will be the host site for all three Cyclone substate games as long as they keep winning. The action starts Friday when Atlantic (15-12) plays Denison-Schleswig (16-18) at 5:00 p.m., followed by HCHS vs. Carroll (4-21). The winners meet back in Harlan Monday night at 7:00 for the District 15 final.
In District 16 at Winterset, the host Huskies (16-10) will play Creston (8-23) while Greene County (14-11) takes on Glenwood (10-19-1) in first round action. The Substate 8 final is set for Wednesday, July 18, in Harlan.
“I think it’s a huge advantage to play at home because you’re familiar with the field and you’re more comfortable when you’re home,” said HCHS head coach Steve Daeges. “You’re in your own dugout and it feels more like a regular season game."
Klaassen (2-0) pitched a complete game in 99 pitches vs. TJ, allowing five hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out five vs. the Yellow Jackets (8-26), who beat Lewis Central 11-2 on Monday.
Sears hit a long solo home run to left field in the first inning and added a two-run shot to dead center in the fifth. He now has five long balls on the season.
