Titan girls stop Cyclone streak at 18

Limited to one second-half field goal, HCHS loses final regular season game 43-42

HARLAN -- With regional play just around the corner, the Harlan Community girls basketball team was about to hit the reset button on its season anyway this past weekend.
Lewis Central just made sure the slate got wiped a little bit cleaner than anyone planned.
Rallying from 11 points down in the third quarter, the Titans connected for five three-pointers during a game-changing 18-5 run Friday night and held the Cyclones to just one made field goal in the entire second half.
And despite a potentially devastating technical foul call with less than a second to go, the third-ranked (4-A) Titans held on to notch a 43-42 mild upset over top-ranked HCHS.
The Cyclones inbounded the ball from midcourt with just :00.7 left on the clock, but were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
The regular-season finale did not count in the Hawkeye Ten standings - the Cyclones had already wrapped up their third straight conference title - but it marked the first time in three years that a league foe got the best of the Harlan girls. The last team to do it: LC with a 51-46 overtime win in February, 2013.
Friday’s outcome also halted the Cyclones’ overall 18-game winning streak that began after a two-point loss to Dowling Catholic in the season opener. HCHS (18-2) will now have a full week off before hosting Bishop Heelan or Denison-Schleswig in a 4-A regional semifinal Saturday night.
