Thunder ends Spartan softball season, 3-2

 DES MOINES -- Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton fell one run short against Grand View Christian last Tuesday night (July 3), losing 3-2 in a Class 1A regional softball quarterfinal.
 The Spartans finished the season at 13-9 overall while the Thunder (17-10) advanced to the Region 7 semifinals and lost to Glidden-Ralston in 10 innings Friday, 9-8.
 Trailing 3-1 after three, the Spartans scored a run in the fifth but were unable to get the game tied vs. Grand View Christian pitcher Emma Heffron, who struck out 11 and walked three while giving up eight hits.
 Five Exira-EHK seniors played in their final game and combined for all eight of the team’s hits.
 Sophia Peppers, a Morningside College basketball recruit, went 3-for-4, Bailey Robertson was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored, Kealey Nelson doubled and Grace Greving and Michaela Hartvigsen both hit a single and drew one walk.
 Eighth-grade pitcher Macy Emgarten took the loss and finished her first varsity season with a record of 11-8. Emgarten allowed just two hits and one earned run in six innings, walked four and struck out nine.
