THREES ARE WILD

Fink, Crawford hit nine treys each; teams combine for 32 long-range shots as Cyclone boys rout Creston, 80-47

HARLAN -- With the outcome long since decided, Tuesday night’s second half between Harlan Community and Creston resembled a below-the-rim version of the NBA All-Star Game.
There were no slam dunks, but three-pointers - 32 of them in all - rained from the sky as the third-ranked (Class 3-A) Cyclones routed the Panthers 80-47 in a non-conference matchup between Hawkeye Ten rivals.
HCHS senior Thomas Fink and Creston junior Cody Crawford both made 9-of-13 threes on the night, Fink drilling seven straight triples to open the second half (six in the third quarter) and Crawford hitting his final six treys in the fourth. Crawford broke Creston’s single-game record for made 3’s while Fink tied the Cyclone mark set by Billy Miller in 2004.
Both sides also broke their team record for treys, HCHS finishing 19-of-35 and the Panthers making 13-of-24. The previous Cyclone record was 17, first set by the 1998 team vs. Glenwood and then again vs. Red Oak in 2004.
Out of 23 made field goals in Tuesday’s second half, 18 came from beyond the arc, including a few generous rolls off the rim and backboard.
Leading 39-19 at the half, HCHS (4-0) blew the game open by outscoring the 1-4 Panthers 27-5 in the third quarter.
