Three Cyclones earn gold at indoor opener

Foss soars 20-9 in long jump; Streit, Bruck also place 1st

VERMILLION, S.D. - Competing in his first track meet since the seventh grade, Harlan Community junior Nick Foss soared nearly 21 feet to win the boys long jump at Tuesday’s Bob Prince Early Bird Invite at the Dakota Dome.
Foss was one of three Cyclone gold medal winners on the day as senior Gillian Streit won the girls shot put and senior Allison Bruck won the 60-meter hurdles.
Overall, the Cyclone girls placed 16 entries in the top 10 while the boys had 12 top-10 entries in the first indoor meet of the year. Both HCHS squads will travel to Storm Lake on Friday for day one of the BVU High School Elite Indoor Meet on the campus of Buena Vista University. Competition begins at 3:30 p.m.
Foss, who also placed fifth in the 60-meter dash, won the long jump by nearly a foot, topping out at 20 feet, 9.25 inches - an early-season performance that HCHS coach Sam Brummer called “incredible” considering the circumstances.
