Spartans bounce back vs. Boyer Valley

Week 9 win at CR-B would clinch Exira-EHK playoff spot

 EXIRA (Oct. 12) -- Tyler Petersen passed for 203 yards and three touchdowns in his first start at quarterback and Jayden Goodwin found the endzone four times overall as the Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton football team bounced back from its first loss of the year to beat Boyer Valley 45-6 last Friday night.
 The 9th-ranked Spartans, who lost at Woodbine 49-45 the previous week when at least three starters went down with injuries, held the Bulldogs to just 133 yards and forced two turnovers on defense, improving to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in 8-Player, District 8 (tied for first place with Audubon).
 Replacing the injured Josh Pettepier at QB, Petersen completed 14-of-19 passes. Two of his touchdowns, including a 60-yarder, went to Goodwin, who finished with with five total receptions for 127 yards and also ran for 78 yards and two scores on just eight carries. Cole Burmeister had a big night as well with 87 yards rushing and one TD and seven catches for 71 yards.
 Spartan tackle leaders vs. Boyer Valley (1-7, 1-5) were Trever Schulz with seven (3 sacks), Creighton Nelson six, Cade Bruns five and both Ian Leader and David Nelson with four.
Playoff picture:
 The Spartans can clinch a playoff berth in Friday night’s regular season finale with a win at Coon Rapids-Bayard (4-4, 3-3) or a loss by Audubon (6-2, 5-1) at CAM (5-3, 3-3). If Exira-EHK loses and Audubon wins, the Spartans will have to qualify for the 16-team playoff field as a wild card based on this year’s new RPI system.
