Shorthanded Cyclones win 1-0 over St. Albert

COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Michael Heithoff’s goal just five minutes into the match proved to be the difference maker last Friday night (May 12) as the Harlan Community boys soccer team held off St. Albert, 1-0, at the YMCA Soccer Fields in Council Bluffs. HCHS was missing three varsity players, including two starters, but found a way to prevail.
“It was next man up and the bench players stepped up and rose to the occasion,” said HCHS head coach Dave Voge. “We were moving the ball well, especially the first half, and we should have scored at least a couple more goals. The defense and midfield did a good job of controlling play and made good decisions on when to go in and challenge for the ball.”
Heithoff’s goal with 34:55 left in the first half was set up by Alex Blum’s pass toward the left side. Heithoff juked a pair of defenders and shot past a sliding goalie to the far post for the score.
