Second-half goals lead Cyclones past Kuemper, 3-0

HARLAN -- Battling wind chills below 30 degrees and a physical Hawkeye Ten opponent, the Harlan Community boys soccer team scored all three of its goals in a tight 10-minute window Monday night to beat Kuemper Catholic 3-0 in its conference opener at Merrill Field.
HCHS improved to 3-0 overall while the Knights slipped to 0-2.
The match remained scoreless until the 26:30 mark of the second half, when Cyclone junior Alex Wingert followed up his own miss off the cross bar with a one time volley and goal to make it 1-0. Wingert’s score came less than seven minutes after another Harlan shot missed the cross bar inches too high.
The wait was much shorter for the second goal of the night - 25 seconds to be exact - when junior Tanner Fink took a pass from Rolly Lokange and split two defenders before scoring from the left side.
HCHS would add on seven minutes later to make it 3-0, this time scoring on a nice assist from Drew Voge to Devin Mahoney for a breakaway goal with 17:23 to play.
Cyclone head coach Dave Voge was pleased with his team’s resiliency on the night as they shook off the rust from a 10-day layoff between games and posted a third straight shutout to start the season. Kuemper, which lost about a dozen seniors off last year’s Class 1-A state runner-up team, played a physical style to keep the game scoreless for more than 53 minutes.
