Sears ties career wins record as Cyclones outlast Wolverines

SIOUX CITY (June 26) -- It wasn’t the best outing of his career, but Brett Sears will take the ‘W.’
Sears labored through four innings to tie the school record for pitching wins last Wednesday night as the Harlan Community baseball team rallied for a 10-7 victory at Sioux City West.
HCHS erased an early 5-0 deficit with six runs in the top of the second inning and broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the fourth, hitting six doubles among 14 total hits.
Sears (5-1) threw 87 pitches in his four innings on the mound and left with a 9-7 lead. He allowed just two hits - both in the first inning - while walking three and notching three strikeouts. Only three out of seven runs off Sears were earned as the fourth-ranked Cyclones (17-4) committed five errors behind him and six all told.
Now 33-4 in his five-year varsity career, Sears tied Danny Schiltz’s HCHS record for wins. Connor Bruck earned his first save of the year behind three innings of scoreless relief.
HCHS ended up outhitting West 14-3, led by two-hit games for Bruck, Luke Schaben, Isaiah Ahrenholtz, Brenden Bartley, Derec Weyer and Jon Owens. Both of Weyer’s hits were doubles.
