Schmitz brothers help IWCC place third at clay target nationals
SAN ANTONIO, TEX. -- Bailey Schmitz earned a pair of individual national championships and Lucas Schmitz also helped Iowa Western Community College to a third-place Division IV finish in the 2019 ACUI Collegiate Clay Targets National Championships, held March 25-April 2 at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio.
Bailey and Lucas, the freshmen sons of Mark and Nancy Schmitz, Westphalia, were scholarship members of the Reivers’ highly successful inaugural Shotgun Sports season.
IWCC blasted 2,159 targets over the course of the six-day event, which consisted of American Trap, Wobble Trap, American Skeet, International Skeet, Sporting Clays and Super Sporting Clays.
Bailey Schmitz brought home a pair of championships for the Reivers in American Trap and Wobble Trap. He broke 94 out of 100 to win the Wobble Trap competition, then finished 97-of-100 in American Trap before outlasting Mitchell Clark of Emmanuel College in a shoot-off to determine the Class B national champion. Schmitz hit 14-of-15 in the shoot-off.
