Rams end Cyclone girls’ season with strong second half

Class 2-A Girls Regional Soccer

GLENWOOD -- A season plagued by frustrating overtime losses as well as lopsided defeats came to an end for the Harlan Community girls soccer team Friday when Glenwood punched in five second-half goals to beat the Cyclones 5-0 in a Class 2-A, Region 2 quarterfinal.
HCHS played with good energy and also dodged a few bullets to reach halftime in a scoreless tie, but the Rams scored three times in a seven-and-a-half minute span early in the second half, then added two goals in the final five minutes for good measure.
Glenwood (9-9) advanced to face 2nd-ranked Lewis Central (11-3) in Tuesday’s semifinal round, with the winner to play Perry or Denison-Schleswig next Monday.
The Cyclones, who lost three double-overtime games and suffered four one-goal defeats overall, finished the year with a 2-15 record. Head coach Jared Boysen was proud that the team never showed any quit despite dealing with injuries and lack of victories.
