Petersen to play volleyball at Briar Cliff

 HARLAN -- Harlan Community senior Olivia Petersen signed a national letter of intent on February 22 to play volleyball at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City. Petersen verbally committed to BCU on her birthday (May 4) last year, then waited through a head coaching change to officially sign with the Chargers.
 Petersen was a three-year starter for the Cyclone volleyball team and finished her career with 607 kills and a kill efficiency of .359 (third in school history). As a senior, the six-foot middle hitter was named second team All-Hawkeye Ten Conference and was also selected to play in the KMAland All-Star Volleyball Series. Petersen led the 2018 Cyclones (18-21 overall) with 235 kills, a .349 kill efficiency, 49 blocks and a serving percentage of .966, adding 70 digs and 13 aces. She was named honorable mention all-conference as a junior when she totaled 218 kills (.395 efficiency), a team-high 77 blocks and 62 digs.
 Petersen also earned one varsity letter each in basketball and bowling, joining the bowling team as a senior and helping HCHS to a fifth-place state tournament finish. Outside of athletics, Petersen is involved in student council, the foreign language club, National Honor Society, Best Buddies Club, FCCLA and HOSA. She also owns her own business, Jewelry by Olivia, and donates profits to cancer fundraisers. Petersen is an honor roll student and has earned academic all-conference honors.
