Monarchs outscore HCHS 10-2 in softball
DENISON (June 13) -- Madison Schumacher’s solo home run gave the Harlan Community softball team a brief 1-0 lead Wednesday night, but 7th-ranked Denison-Schleswig responded with 10 runs over the next three innings and beat the Cyclones 10-2.
HCHS pitcher Morgan Schaben struck out the side in order in the first, but the Monarchs would fan just two more times the rest of the game, using a combination of infield hits, errors, free passes and Cyclone indecision to pull away.
Junior Sarah Heilesen pitched a three-hitter (two walks, nine strikeouts) for D-S, which improved to 14-2 overall and 8-2 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play. Both Monarch losses have come against Atlantic.
HCHS dropped to 8-7 overall and 6-3 in the H-10 going into Thursday’s varsity doubleheader at No. 15 Glenwood. The Cyclones currently stand fifth in the league standings.
Schaben (5-5) allowed six hits in six innings, walking two batters, hitting two and striking out five.
