Monarchs outscore Cyclone girls 11-1

HARLAN (May 5) -- Facing a good team with a shorthanded lineup proved difficult for the Harlan Community girls soccer team Saturday morning as Denison-Schleswig handed the Cyclones an 11-1 defeat at Merrill Field. The match ended by the mercy rule with 2:26 remaining.
Led by four goals each from junior Alex Mohr and senior Tori Herrig, Denison attempted 31 total shots (23 on goal) compared to just eight for Harlan. The Monarchs improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play while HCHS dropped to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the H-10.
Due to various reasons, the Cyclones played without starting goalie Makenzie Jones as well as one of their top defenders in Alana Monson (injury) and two more regulars in Megan and Lindsey Andersen.
“They’re really good. Their forwards are good,” said HCHS head coach Jared Boysen of Denison. “Alex Mohr is one of the best in the state, probably. If we let her dribble, she could dribble it around us pretty well."
Vanessa Gunderson added two goals for D-S and Kelby Brungardt had one. Senior Kylee Hinz scored the lone goal for HCHS in the first half and led the team with five total shots and three shots on goal.

St. Albert 10, Harlan Community 0
COUNCIL BLUFFS (April 30) -- Kalyn Wettengel scored a hat trick and three other St. Albert girls added two goals as the 10th-ranked (1A) Saintes handed HCHS a 10-0 loss at the Council Bluffs YMCA Fields last Monday (April 30).
St. Albert (7-2) scored twice in the first eight minutes of play, led 6-0 at halftime and ended the game by the rule in the 67th minute. Ellerie Tarbox, Makenna Shepard and Teagan Blackburn all chipped in two goals for the Saintes, who outshot HCHS 29-5 on goal. St. Albert also won the JV game 3-0.
Dani Arkfeld and Lucy Borkowski both attempted two shots for the Cyclones and Kenzie Jones made 19 saves.
Harlan Community 2, Atlantic 1
ATLANTIC (April 27) -- The Cyclone girls picked up their first win of the season on Friday, April 27, scoring two second-half goals to rally past Atlantic, 2-1, on the road.
Trailing 1-0 for nearly 53 minutes after the Trojans scored early in the first half, HCHS tied things up on freshman Hannah Bissen’s first career goal in the 65th minute. Bissen broke away from the defense and was able to finish on the goalie. Seven minutes later, senior Kylee Hinz tapped the ball in off a corner kick for the go-ahead goal. Lucy Borkowski was credited with an assist.
The Cyclones finished with a 14-5 shots on goal advantage and took 20 shots overall, led by Hinz with five and Dani Arkfeld and Borkowski with three each. Senior goalie Kenzie Jones finished with four saves.
