Monarchs end Cyclone boys’ shutout streak, 4-0
DENISON -- The Harlan Community boys soccer team’s impressive shutout streak came to an end Thursday night when the Cyclones were blanked by Denison-Schleswig, 4-0.
Sophomore Cesar Rodriguez scored a three-goal hat trick for the Monarchs and assisted their other goal as Denison became the first team all year to score on the 14th-ranked (2-A) Cyclones, who had outscored their first four opponents by a combined 11-0.
The Monarchs’ combination of fast, physical and skilled play proved too much for HCHS on this night. The Cyclones, who appeared tentative at times, trailed just 1-0 at halftime before allowing three second-half goals despite having the wind in their favor. D-S outshot the Cyclones 11-8 overall and 8-5 in shots on goal.
“They’re always very good ball handlers and tonight they showed that,” said HCHS coach Dave Voge. “They were very physical - in a good way - and we just weren’t ready for that. We did adjust a lot better [to the physicality] when we played Kuemper [April 10], but these guys are technically sound, they know what they’re doing. They’re making the perfect runs, perfect passes, very good on the ball and they are just a superior team.”
