Mohr’s late-game heroics force two overtimes as Denison girls hand Cyclones frustrating 71-60 defeat
DENISON (Jan. 23) -- Alex Mohr saved the day for Denison-Schleswig twice on Tuesday night, scoring game-tying baskets at the end of regulation and again in overtime as the Monarchs outlasted the Harlan Community girls 71-60 in double OT.
The game did not count in the Hawkeye Ten standings as the 12th-ranked (Class 4A) Monarchs already won the conference meeting 44-29 on December 8 in Harlan.
The loss was still a heartbreaker for the Cyclones, who had outscored D-S 20-13 in the fourth quarter to take a 51-49 lead. Following a missed free throw, Mohr dribbled the length of the court and banked in a short fade-away shot from the right side to tie the score with 11 seconds left.
HCHS managed to get a good look at the basket in the final seconds of regulation but Nicole Lange’s shot in traffic barely missed as time expired.
The Cyclones also led 58-55 in the first OT when Mohr struck again, draining a long three-pointer with :01.8 remaining. Denison finally took control in double overtime, outscoring Harlan 13-2 to nail down the win and improve to 12-4 overall. HCHS dropped to 7-8 overall but the two teams remain 5-3 in conference play, tied with Kuemper Catholic (5-3) and Shenandoah (4-3) for third place.
Cyclone forwards Lange and Macie Leinen led the team with 21 and 14 points, respectively, both grabbing five rebounds.
