Lions halt Cyclone girls’ regional soccer run, 4-0

URBANDALE (June 1) -- Harlan Community played hard and determined, but didn’t control the ball enough to hang with Des Moines Christian in Friday’s Class 1A regional semifinal girls soccer game.
The 15th-ranked Lions dominated possession time and shot attempts and got a hat trick from Angela Kinzie on their home turf, posting their 11th shutout of the year with a 4-0 win over HCHS.
Des Moines Christian (15-2) advanced to Monday’s Region 3 final at No. 3 Nevada (14-4), which handled Creston 10-0 on Friday.
The Cyclones, who entered the contest having won two straight, closed their season at 3-15 overall.
“I thought we played hard, and that’s what I told them [to do] at the beginning of the game,” said HCHS head coach Jared Boysen. “We knew that they had a good record and they were tough defensively. They haven’t let a lot of people score... So just go hard and leave everything out there, and that’s what we did for the most part. They were able to possess the ball and they were good on their feet.”
The Lions finished with a 25-5 advantage in total shots, including 15-0 on goal. Lindsey Andersen, Dani Arkfeld, Hannah Bissen, Lucy Borkowski and Anna Shelton all took one shot for the Cyclones.
Despite allowing the four goals, HCHS senior goalie Makenzie Jones played one of her best games overall in making 11 saves.
Five Cyclone seniors took part in their final game Friday, including Jones, leading scorer Kylee Hinz (9 goals), Alana Monson, Jaden Anastasi and Maggie Koke.
