Lady Vikes test sixth-ranked Cardinals

Treynor prevails 2-1

AVOCA (May 3) -- It didn’t result in a victory, but AHSTW girls soccer coach Beth Herbst was thrilled with her team’s effort during Friday night’s 2-1 loss to Treynor.
Despite being outshot and outpossessed by a wide margin, the Lady Vikes (4-3) hung right with the sixth-ranked (1A) Cardinals (8-2) on the scoreboard, even leading for a 12-minute stretch of the first half.
Alyssa Kellar’s header goal off a Treynor corner kick tied the match with 8:41 left in the first half and Rachel Kinsella’s breakaway goal in traffic with 26:19 to play proved to be the game winner.
The Lady Vikes scored their only goal midway through the first half when a long free kick bounced out of the hands of the Treynor goalie and deflected off the shin of a charging Madison Simonson and went directly into the net.
“We definitely showed up,” Herbst said of her team. “We gave 110 percent the entire game. I was so proud of the girls.
“We improve every single day, so being able to compete with a team like Treynor, who is awesome, just feels amazing to me. We really worked hard.”
AHSTW 3, Atlantic 2
ATLANTIC (April 30) -- Jordyn Holtz, Morgan Holtz and Hailey Haynes all scored a goal last Tuesday as the Lady Vikes picked up a nice non-conference victory at Atlantic, winning 3-2.
Morgan Holtz also had an assist on the night while Sydney Zimmerman made eight saves.
