Lady Vikes rout ACGC in regional opener

Second-ranked Treynor up next

AVOCA (Feb. 10) -- The AHSTW girls basketball team finished the first half on an 11-3 run and carried that momentum toward an excellent second half here Saturday night, defeating ACGC 65-40 in the opening round of Class 2A regional play.
Freshman Claire Denning hit 5-of-7 three-pointers and matched sophomore Kinsey Scheffler for the team lead with 17 points as the Lady Vikes won their sixth game in a row and evened their overall record at 11-11. They will travel to Treynor on Tuesday and face the 2nd-ranked Cardinals (19-1) in a Region 7 quarterfinal at 7:00 p.m.
AHSTW lost to Treynor by scores of 60-33 and 68-25 in the regular season, but head coach Tyler Morris hopes that his squad will approach Tuesday as an opportunity to make a statement - win or lose - about the program’s improvement.
To hang with last year’s 2A state runner-up at all, the Lady Vikes will need a much better start than they had against the 2-20 Chargers on Saturday. Struggling for early offense against ACGC’s 3-2 zone - nine of the first 13 points came on Denning treys - AHSTW trailed for much of the first quarter and led just 17-16 midway through the second.
The tide began to turn late in the half, however, when Lady Vike senior Sarah Butcher hit two threes and combined with Scheffler to score the team’s final 11 points before the break. Butcher’s second trey came with just :02 left on the clock, making it 28-19, and she finished the game with 10 points off the bench.
AHSTW played its best ball in the third quarter, outscoring the Chargers 22-12. Claire Denning and Claire Harris combined to hit three treys early in the period and the Lady Vikes did a great job of breaking the Charger press for buckets and also hitting cutters in the half court sets. The lead grew to 63-35 in the fourth.
Scheffler had a nice overall floor game, posting team highs with 10 rebounds, five steals and seven assists.
