Lady Vikes challenge No. 10 Eagles in 3-1 defeat

AVOCA (Oct. 1) -- For four full sets Tuesday night, the AHSTW volleyball team basically matched 10th-ranked (2A) Underwood spike for spike.
Playing aggressively while also limiting errors, the Lady Vikes pulled off a stirring rally in game two but couldn’t get over the hump in the other three, losing a hard-fought Western Iowa Conference match by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25.
The final stat ledger showed AHSTW with 55 kills (.308 efficiency), 67 digs and 13 blocks. Underwood had 56 kills (.299 efficiency), 68 digs and 13 blocks.
The difference in set four may have come down to the Lady Vikes’ four late service errors after they had missed only three prior serves all night. The first of the four came at 15-15 and Underwood would add the next three points as well and lead the rest of the way.
The Eagles improved to 18-4 overall and 4-1 in the WIC while the Lady Vikes dropped to 15-11 overall and a deceptive 1-5 in league play.
“They’re a very good team, well coached, they have outstanding athletes... Obviously we would have liked the win, but I think we can take some confidence away from this game,” said AHSTW head coach Kelsey Muxfeldt.
“We talk about having to do the little things all the time, and missing four serves (in our last eight) kind of killed us there, but other than that I think we finally put it all together. Everyone was hitting well tonight, we were playing good defense, we were getting lots of touches at the net.”
The Lady Vikes trailed 21-16 in set two when they finished by scoring nine of the last 10 points, including two kills by senior Kinsey Scheffler, who broke Haley Blum’s school record for kills in a match with 21.

Lady Vike Record Breakers
AHSTW volleyball seniors Kinsey Scheffler and Paige Osweiler have combined to set four school records this season, including a pair of marks established Tuesday night.
 • With 21 kills vs. Underwood, Scheffler broke Haley Blum’s school record (19) for kills in a single match and also surpassed her own single-season school record for kills with 275 (previously 274).
 • On September 21 at the West Harrison Tournament, Scheffler broke Blum’s school record for career kills, which stood at 665. She now has 785 career kills.
 • Also on September 21, Osweiler broke Taylor Baggett’s school record of 827 career digs and now has 979 through Tuesday.
